Having decided in high school to become an illustrator, Nancy Taliaferro enrolled at Virginia Commonwealth University (then Richmond Professional Institute) to major in Commercial Art, and she graduated with a BFA degree. As an illustrator, her experience came with advertising agencies and newspapers and also as a fashion illustrator for Miller and Rhoads.
A new direction in art came when raising her family, Taliaferro began to make portraits of her children. Her medium was usually pastels, but over time she began to use oils. Her primary interest then became painting in the classical tradition.
“While I like to paint many subjects as a realistic painter, I have always found the figure and portraiture to be the most compelling. My effort is to deepen in sensitivity and understanding – and to be able to express that in my work.”
